Kat Carmichael (she/her) has been drawn to creativity for as long as she can remember. What began as a love for art, painting, and playing with colour eventually found its outlet in hairstyling. Kat started her cosmetology education in 10th grade and went on to graduate from the Hairstylist Program at Algonquin College, setting the foundation for a career rooted in both technical skill and artistic expression.
Passionate about precision cutting and creative colour, Kat has continued to refine her craft through advanced education, including a cutting course with Vidal Sassoon, numerous Cut Craft classes with Wella, and earning her Master Colour Certification with Wella. Her talent and creativity have been recognized nationally, placing her in the Top 10 for Canadian Creative Colour at Wella TrendVision multiple times.
Inspiration for Kat’s work comes from many places and aspects of day-to-day life, such as nature, film, travel, music, and creative people. Outside the salon, music plays a huge role in her life, with metal and punk rock fueling her energy and artistic edge. She’s also a self-proclaimed horror movie lover.

Maddie (she/her) began her hairstyling journey in the bathroom of her family home, where creativity quickly turned into a lifelong passion.
By 17, she had landed her first salon job and knew immediately that the hair industry was where she belonged. She went on to graduate from the Hairstyling program at Algonquin College, followed by a certificate in Salon & Spa Management the following year.
Driven by curiosity and a deep love of education, Maddie has explored many corners of the industry. Her career has included working as a brand ambassador for Label M, teaching at Algonquin College alongside her former instructors, and backstage work at New York Fashion Week, and styling for film sets. Continued learning has always been at the core of her growth, taking her across London, New York City, Montreal, Toronto, Miami, and San Francisco to train with and learn from industry leaders. Maddie also established herself a clientele in Toronto, working as a regular guest stylist at BSH Toronto.
Outside the salon, Maddie’s enthusiasm for growth extends into her personal life. You’ll often find her rock climbing, biking, snowboarding, getting outdoors with her dogs, or slowing things down at home with knitting and gardening.

Leila Chen

Leila (she/her) found her way into hairstyling in 2019, almost by accident. After initially pursuing nursing and landing on a waitlist, she pivoted to hair as a second option—but what started as a backup plan quickly became something much bigger. After years of talking about hair school, a push from her husband led her to finally apply (out of a little bit of spite), and it quickly became one of the best decisions she’s ever made. Since then, she has fully immersed herself in education, earning her Master Color Expert Certification with Wella Studio, a Master of Balayage Certification, and completing advanced cutting courses with Sassoon. Her training also includes barbering at Glassbox and extension certifications with Great Lengths and Hot Heads, along with recent masterclasses in bridal hairstyling through Parla Hair and the Bridal Hair Collective.
Leila’s work is rooted in both technical precision and a highly personalized approach. She’s deeply drawn to the science of hair—from the geometry of cutting to the chemistry of colour and the physics of how hair moves. Every service is approached with intention, considering head shape, texture, and lifestyle to create results that feel effortless and wearable. She specializes in soft, lived-in colour, natural dimension, and cuts that grow out beautifully, and has a strong appreciation for men’s grooming, particularly barbering and mid-length styles. Hair and scalp health are also a key part of her work, grounded in the belief that healthy hair starts at the root. Alongside her in-salon work, her approach to bridal focuses on creating a full-circle experience, supporting clients from early preparation through to the wedding day and beyond.
Outside of the salon, Leila is a mom first. She values self-care, embraces the realities of motherhood, and finds joy in the everyday—whether that’s spending time with family, getting outdoors, or making memories with her son, Thomas.

We are Team Volta Hair Space (VHS)
Founded by Kat Carmichael and Maddie Hille, Volta Hair Space (VHS) was born from a place of growth and the desire to challenge the traditional salon culture. What began as a name chosen with a mix of intuition and spontaneity quickly revealed its deeper meaning. In Italian literature, “Volta” represents a turn in thought — a shift in direction or perspective.
That’s exactly what Volta Hair Space represents: Our turn. A turn toward reimagining what a salon can be — a workplace built on education, inclusivity, and creativity.
We’re committed to raising standards for the industry, sharing knowledge with our clients, and maintaining a truly safe and welcoming environment.
